SPY!
by Anna Myers "He resigned his life, a sacrifice to his country's liberty." In 1776, Nathan Hale was hanged by the British as a spy, yet the story of his life is not a morbid one and his legacy is one of victory. Three years earlier, Nathan Hale was an 18-year-old teacher determined to make a difference in the lives of his students. He was full of fun and did unusual things to inspire his students to want to learn. Twelve-year-old Jonah Hawkins was one of Master Hale's thirty students in a small schoolhouse in New London, Connecticut. This is the American Revolution told from two points of view...that of The Man, Nathan Hale, who shared his love of learning and his love for America and that of The Boy, Jonah, who was learning to make his own choices in a time when his world was crumbling around him. It is the story of gentleness, compassion, honesty, courage, conflict, and patriotism. It is the story of a young colonial patriot, whose last words still ring today: "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country." Nathan Hale was gifted in his love of learning, his love of children, and his love for his country. In the end, he gave the greatest gift of all: his life. SPY! puts faces on the American Revolution. You will experience the events and the people through the eyes and the hearts of Nathan Hale and Jonah Hawkins. They will help this part of history will become a part of who you are. Kids' Wings proudly presents SPY! with the Kids' Wings Award for Excellence in Children's Literature. Research
